A New Rebuild Record!
Volunteers from Ballews Crew demoed and installed an 84 ft ramp in a single build day. This feat takes the new record holder for the longest ramp built in a single build day.
By the Numbers
- An 84-foot ramp was built by 19 volunteers, including one volunteer site leader, and two staff members.
- The volunteer crew was multi-generational.
- $5,195 is the estimated value of volunteer labor, which surpasses the $4,065.71 total material cost
- It took one, 20-yard dumpster to haul away the old ramp, which was not up to code or in a safe condition
- About 400 sq feet of lumber was used on the project.
- One older adult living with a disability is now safer in their home.
About the Ramp
The best access for a safe entry was located at the side of the home furthest from the driveway. Additionally, the home is on a hill, where the ramp had to follow the downhill slope. A tie-in from the ramp to the main porch steps was made via a landing. Handrails were installed. All Rebuild Upstate ramps are built to ADA standards.
After measuring posts and framing, the volunteers split work into the home egress and the driveway, where teams worked from the outside-in, where they tied in both sections.
