A Servant’s Heart: Mickey & Friends

A Servant’s Heart: Mickey & Friends

For Rebuild Upstate, Build Day Sponsors are often represented by business employees or church members working together toward an organizational goal or mission. It’s admirable when one individual decides to take on the responsibility of sponsorship, dedicating personal time and funds to help a neighbor in need.

We’re grateful for one such individual, Mickey Walker, a strategy analyst with World Finance and a volunteer and advisory council member with Rebuild Upstate since 2025. As a recent Presbyterian College grad and new resident to Greenville, Mickey immediately set his sights on community service in the Upstate.

After encouraging his workplace to volunteer with Rebuild Upstate, securing funds for repairs, and then planning an additional build day, Mickey decided to deepen his commitment to our organization with a personal sponsorship – a build day with his buddies.

On their “Mickey & Friends” build day, the group replaced siding and windows for a widower who lives with multiple sclerosis, which affects her ability to accomplish daily tasks. She loved having the volunteers’ company and certainly enjoys her new, more energy-efficient windows.

Through this build and his volunteerism with World Finance and the advisory council, Mickey has helped complete 4 accessibility ramps, window replacements, and exterior repairs for several neighbors in need.

On why service is important, Mickey said, “I’ve always had a passion for service, and seeing how God has blessed me with an able body that can do a lot I see it as extremely important to use that to support others.  There are many people who have the servant heart but not necessarily the ability to do long days on construction projects, so I find this niche to be the best for me to use the gifts God has given me.”

Mickey also spreads his generosity at several other organizations, including World Relief, Friends of the Reedy River, Triune Mercy Center, and Greenville County Animal Care Services.

This sentiment and Mickey’s dedication to helping others are reasons why Rebuild Upstate will honor him with the 2025 Young Professional of the Year Award at our upcoming volunteer appreciation event, the Because of You BBQ on April 23rd.

Community Engagement Director Rose Davis said, “Mickey consistently shows up and serves with humble passion. We are grateful for his leadership and how he sets a positive example for others in his age group.”

On behalf of all the homeowners we serve, thank you, Mickey.

Because of people like you, Rebuild Upstate is more equipped to repair homes and restore hope for families in need.
